General Description

Cylinder head installed between cylinder liner and taped cover. It connect intake and exhaust manifold through expansion pieces (both sides). It holds Intake and Exhaust valves,Fuel injector,Safety valves,Starting air valve.
Jacket water and nozzle cooling system also integrated with cylinder head.

Different component attached in cylinder head

Cylinder Head
  • Intake valve :
  • Exhaust valve :
  • Injector sleeve
  • Fuel injector
  • Safety valve
  • Starting air valve
  • Different studs
  • Charge air intake and Exhaust gas removal ports
  • Nozzle and jacket water cooling port
  • 'O' rings

    Material used in cylinder head

Most common materials used to cast(generally casting process used) cylinder head is cast iron.Cast iron heads are inexpensive, durable but weight is heavy.Aluminum also used to cast cylinder head.Aluminum heads are light weighted (about 50% of cast iron head),maintenance is easy but cost is higher and needs very careful attention during tightening studs and bolts(to avoid damage).

    Problem rises with cylinder head

Various problems rises with cylinder mainly due to excess exhaust gas temperature and lack of using proper head materials and engine vibrations.Excess exhaust temperature play most destructive role for cylinder head problems.Problems arise with cylinder head are
    • Crack
    • Corrosion
    • Loose taped guide
    • Outer surface damage
    • 'O' ring damage
    • Dimension changed

    1. The blog highlights the crucial role of a Cylinder Head in an engine, connecting the cylinder liner to the intake and exhaust manifolds while housing essential components like valves, fuel injectors, and cooling systems. Cylinder heads are typically made from cast iron for durability or aluminum for lighter weight and easier maintenance, though care must be taken when tightening bolts. Common issues such as cracking, corrosion, or damage to O-rings often result from high exhaust temperatures, engine vibrations, or material shortcomings, emphasizing the importance of proper design and maintenance of the cylinder head.
