Cylinder Liner

The cylinder liner is made of alloyed cast iron and is suspended in the cylinder frame with a low situated flange. The top of the cylinder liner is fitted with a cooling jacket. The cylinder liner has scavenge ports, drilled holes for cylinder lubrication and is prepared for installation of temperature sensors, if required.

The most important properties of cylinder liner are
  1. High anti-galling properties 
  2. Less wear on the cylinder liner itself
  3. Less wear on the partner piston ring  
  4. Less consumption of lubricant
  5. Should transfer maximum heat to the coolant
  6. Inner surface should be such that with piston rings it makes gas tight surface
Cylinder liner problems
  1. Most common problem is O ring damage and causes water leakage
  2. O ring grove damage also causes water leakage
  3. Cylinder liner inside surface get scratched and cause exhaust gas leakage
  4. Cylinder liner get cracked
  5. In outer surface of cylinder liner scale form due to low quality cooling water
  6. Cylinder liner inside diameter increase due to friction with piston rings (lack of proper cylinder lubrication system) and become useless
Possible solutions
  1. Use O rings made from proper materials
  2. Check cylinder lubrication system 
  3. Check piston rings
  4. Use proper cooling agent in water
  5. Use cylinder liner made from proper combination of metals
  6. Keep cylinder liners inside and outside temperature in balance to prevent thermal cracking
