Piston is called the heart of engine. Two part piston includes a light alloy steel skirt and a steel type piston crown of high temperature and wear resistance. Both parts are connected by anti fatigue bolts. For piston sealing two types of piston rings are used-compression and oil control ring.Pistons are cooled by oil fed through connecting rod.

Piston manufacturing methods
  1. Casting
  2. Forging
Most pistons are made by casting(mainly gravity die casting).Aluminum and silicon alloy used as a molten metal.A big advantage with forged pistons is they generally result in a more ductile material, with the effect being the piston can take a higher level of detonation before failing.
    Piston material properties
    1. Good hardening properties
    2. Good corrosion resistant
    3. Can withstand in high temperature and pressure
    Problems
    • Piston crown part get cracked
    • Rubbing from upper surface
    • Piston rings corrosion due to friction
    • Oil control rings spring get loosen
    Possible solutions
    • Use piston made from proper materials
    • Use proper lubrication system
    • Reduce vibrations of engine
