Defination
A boiler is an enclosed vessel, provides a means for combustion heat to be transferred into water until it becomes heated steam. The steam under pressure is then usable for transferring the heat to a process. The function of a boiler in the steam cycle is to convert water into steam.
Requirements of an efficient boiler
1) Should generate maximum amount of steam at a required pressure and temperature and quality with minimum fuel consumption.
2) Should be light in weight and should not occupy large space.
3) Should conform to safety regulations.
4) Should have low initial cost, installation cost and maintenance cost.
5) Should be able to cope with fluctuating demands of steam supply.
6) All parts and components should be easily accessible for inspection and repair.
Classification of boilers
Boiler cal be classified in various way.According to the flow of substance flowing through the boiler tube, Method of firing,According to Pressure of steam,According to circulation of water and so on.
Boiler Mounting and Accessories
Boiler Mounting: Boiler mountings are the machine components that are mounted over the body of the boiler itself for the safety of the boiler and for complete control of the process of steam generation.
Boiler Accessories: Boiler accessories are those components which are installed either inside or outside the boiler to increase the efficiency of the plant and to help in the proper working of the plant.
Visual and Functional inspection of boiler
Boilers, storage tanks and other pressure equipment are potentially dangerous objects. While operating, they contain large amounts of energy, which when they fail, is released instantaneously, usually with devastating results. When water changes from liquid to steam it expands 1600 times its original volume. In other words, one cubic foot of water instantly converts to 1600 cubic feet of steam. A small boiler having a volume of 10 cubic feet and operating at a pressure of 100 psi (pounds per square inch) has an explosive equivalent of 2278 grams of TNT.
In order to ensure the continued safety of pressure equipment; it is inspected by qualified commissioned inspectors on a periodic basis. The purpose of the inspection is to ensure that such accidents do not happen. Since inspections are a snapshot in time and can only tell how safe the vessel is at the time of the inspection, there is an implied duty on the owner/operator of the vessel to keep it in safe and proper working order.
